Great monuments of ancient Rome

Ancient monuments and ruins in Rome? Well, you will find them everywhere, sometimes at the corners of alleys, inlaid in palaces, churches, underground, more or less well preserved of course.

The main ones are hard to miss:

  • The Pantheon, built to pay tribute to the great Greco-Roman gods, exceptionally well preserved, whose main body is circular and covered with an impressive dome pierced by an oculus.
  • The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre in the Roman world, elliptical in shape, where gladiator and animal fights entertained the Roman people. It is certainly the most emblematic of the monuments of the eternal city, part of which is well preserved, despite the centuries and the looting of its stones to build the Roman palaces and churches.
  • The Roman Forum was the political and cultural centre under the Republic and the Roman Empire. It is a vast archaeological space, occupying a valley, more than 600 meters long, between the Capitoline, the Colosseum, and on the Palatine hill where built the imperial palaces.
