Museums in Rome

The four museums described on the page Great Museums of Rome can fill many days of visit, especially if they are cold or rainy: Vatican Museums, Capitoline Museums, National Roman Museum, Borghese Gallery.
But the city’s artistic and archaeological collections are not limited to these, far from it.

Antiquity and archaeology

  • The Trajan’s Market (Mercati di Traiano) include a museum dedicated to imperial forums in part of the ancient structures of this forum. They have been open since November 2007.
  • Centrale Montemartini

    The Planetarium is located in the same building as the Museum of Roman Civilization.
  • Centrale Montemartini
    Amazing and fascinating museum of Roman antiquities housed in an old power plant station.
  • The Museum of the Walls of Rome (Museo delle Mura di Roma), in the Porta San Sebastian gate and part of the walls of Hadrian, is a small museum dedicated to these walls.
  • The Museum of Ancient Sculpture Giovanni Barracco (Museo di scultura antica) preserves interesting works.

    The Barberine Palace houses most of the National Gallery of Ancient Art, mainly Renaissance paintings and sculptures.
  • Corsini Gallery
    The beautiful Corsini Palace hosts the other part of the National Collection of Ancient Art, with paintings and sculptures.

    The small park of Villa Torlonia has several neo-classical or other buildings housing museums.

  • Central Museum of the Risorgimento (Museo Centrale del Risorgimento al Vittoriano)

    In a remarkable building of 2010, the MAXXI National Museum of Arts of the 21st century is the first museum in Italy dedicated to contemporary art
