Views and panoramas of Rome: hills and terraces

The panoramas of Rome offer unique perspectives on the city from its hills and terraces. This article presents the main viewpoints, such as Piazza Garibaldi on the Janiculum, the terrace of the Pincio above the Piazza del Popolo, the belvedere of the Orange Garden on the Aventine, and the view of the Roman Forum from the Capitoline, but also less known places with the Monte Mario, the highest point of Rome.

Panorama of the Janiculum Piazza Garibaldi

On the other side of the Tiber, the Janiculan hill overlooks the Trastevere district. This is the most famous viewpoint of the city around Garibaldi Square (Piazzale Garibaldi), where every midday is fired the traditional white cannon shot. On one side the view embraces a large part of Rome, and on the other emerges the great dome of St Peter’s Basilica.
These romantic places are often the rendezvous of enamoured young Italians.

Pincio: panoramic terrace

The Pincian hill overlooks Piazza del Popolo, north of the Campo Marzio and the historic center. From the terrace of Piazza Napoleon I you have a beautiful view of the city and the Vatican, with the nice square in the foreground.

Panorama from the hill of the Aventine

The small Orange Garden is located on the Aventine hill, along the Basilica of Santa Sabina. It is worth the visit to admire the beautiful view from its belvedere over a good part of the city, especially facing the Saint Peter’s dome.

Near the basilica and the previous garden, one has an original vision through the Aventine Keyhole (buco della serratura in Italian) of the priory of the Hospitallers, Knights of Malta Square, where in the center of a poplar alley is discovered the dome of Saint Peter.

Panorama from Monte Mario

Near the bar Zodiaco, there is a terrace at the top of Monte Mario, the highest hill in Rome, and the view embraces the entire city.

On the Capitoline hill there are beautiful views embracing the Roman Forum, including that from the Tabularium within the Capitoline Museums, but especially the belvedere of the Via di Monte Tarpeo, on the public street.
