Province of Latina

The Province of Latina runs along the coast southeast of Rome. You can discover beautiful beaches and coastal portions, but also small towns and historic villages, such as the beautiful Gaeta which is the easternmost, Terracina and Sperlonga, natural sites including the Circeo National Park, shrines, etc.
It also includes the charming Pontine Islands including Ponza 1h20 crossing. Its provincial capital, Latina, is not a tourist destination, but it is a special city, having been founded in 1932 during the remediation of the marshes of the region in the fascist era, as a model city.

Places and sights to see, from west to east (for beaches refer to the page dedicated to the beaches of Lazio):

  • Inland, Cori is a charming village that has kept beautiful Roman remains in its old town, including those of temples.
  • Not far from Cori, Norma is a village located next to the vast and suggestive remains of ancient Norba, including cyclopean walls, which is also a paraglider take-off site.
  • At the foot of Norma, the Gardens of Ninfa arranged in the middle of the vestiges of an abandoned medieval village, particularly flowered in spring.
  • Still inland, Sermoneta is a pretty medieval village, next to the pretty Valvisciolo Abbey.
  • Fossanova Abbey is one of the most beautiful in the region founded by the Benedictines in the 9th century.
  • On the coast a nature reserve incorporates the marshes and the coastline with beautiful and large beaches from Sabaudia to Mount Circe, with the Circeo National Park.
  • Against the Mount Circeo, San Felice Circeo has a pretty little historic center that dominates the coast
  • Terrracina is an interesting town where Roman and medieval remains are discovered in its historic center, with the site of the Temple of Jupiter Anxur nearby that dominates the coast.
  • Fondi, city that has kept its Roman urban plan, which has its charm without being tourist.
  • Sperlonga is a pretty village with its alleys of white houses on a promontory. There is also the Villa of Tiberius and its beautiful beaches.
  • Itri is a village with a medieval castle and a fortified village. A few kilometers in the direction of Formia are beautiful portions of the ancient Appian Way.
  • Gaeta is probably the most interesting of the towns of the province, whose historic center dates back to the Romans, with several sanctuaries, the imposing Angevin-Aragonese castle that dominates the sea, and the beautiful beaches towards Sperlonga.
  • Formia: pretty typical town, little tourist, with its Roman cistern and in the hinterland a beautiful wild mountain and its panoramas of the Aurunci Mountains Park.
  • The archaeological site of the ancient Minturno, and between Formia and Minturno the rocky coast of Gianola
  • Park and Mount Scauri where Roman remains literally have their feet in the water
