Coast and beaches near Rome

You can easily reach the sea from Rome, for example with the regional train, in about 30-45 minutes.
If you have a car, the most beautiful coasts are south between Sperlonga and Gaeta, which is a bit far. The closest to Rome is Lido di Ostia, with its stretches of sand far from being the most attractive, but which have their interest.
Between the two, however, are beautiful beaches, such as the Caves of Nero in Anzio; the wild beach of Torre Astura where an ancient fort is surrounded by waters; the large stretches of sand and their dunes from Bufalara to Sabaudia; to the natural park of Circeo with at the foot of the beautiful promontory of Circeus the rocky coves of Batteria Punta Rossa.

To the north are also beautiful stretches of sand, such as in Santa Severa near Santa Marinella, at the foot of a beautiful castle, or the wild beach at Torre Flavia near Cerveteri.

Whether to the north or to the south, there are large sand tongues, the least concrete being to the south where are also the most beautiful villages and remarkable sites.

Lido di Ostia

Although they are not the most beautiful, and sometimes domed and not very clean in summer, the beaches of Lido di Ostia still have their charm and are easily accessible from Rome, being closer to the ancient site of Ostia. In addition the amenities of the city are numerous on this coastline that offers many bars, restaurants, etc. A bus leads south to cancelli where the beaches are more pleasant (free spaces are between the paying areas).

How to get there?

Take the train ROMA LIDO, towards «Lido di Ostia» for example from the station PIRAMIDE OSTIENSE (on the metro B)
Then for the stop, two possibilities:

  • For the nearest beach: get off at «Stella Polare» station, then walk (about 10 minutes) south. Several beaches are free of access, others are paying.
  • For nicer beaches: get off at Station C. Colombo (terminus), take bus 07: «Torvajanica, linea 07 Mare». This bus stops at the various «cancelli» (from 1 to 7) access to the beaches, which follow one another every 500 meters approximately. Many beach areas are paid to land, but portions are free of facilities. Capocotto, a favorite of the Romans, is also nudist.
